Compuware Vantage Knowledgebase
What is Vantage?
Vantage is an integrated suite of software tools produced by Compuware to provide
a complete monitoring and application service performance management solution. These
products allow an IT manager to pro-actively plan, manage, monitor and troubleshoot
application availability and performance.
Why use Vantage?
Rather than using separate and individual IT components for monitoring or troubleshooting
an application or network issue, the Vantage suite offers a complete integrated
application management suite of products, which complement or work in conjunction
with each other.
How does Vantage help you to achieve your business objectives?
In order to ensure critical business applications remain within defined Service
Level Agreements (SLAs), Vantage is able to monitor application performance and
proactively isolate and resolve any application problems or anomalies. Thus facilitating
the objective of optimising application performance over the network infrastructure
that reflects the business requirements.
To ensure that the applications perform within the required levels of service; the
Vantage suite focuses on application monitoring from an end user perspective. Therefore
IT Manager would not only know and understand the delivered end-user application
response times, but provide proactive service level management (SLM) that monitors
application performance and the end-user experience.
What are the range of Vantage Products?
CLIENT VANTAGE
Client Vantage focuses on end-user monitoring. This ensures that applications are
available and performance is maintained within satisfactory response time levels.
Client Vantage addresses different kinds of critical end user monitoring requirements.
What types of end user monitoring are available?
Agentless monitoring measures each users application response times for both web
and other application traffic. It passively collects data from anywhere in the network
from a centralized location.
Passive monitoring captures response times for specific transactions, monitors workstation
health and captures detailed system information when workstation applications fail.
Active monitoring lets you gauge the response times for key business applications
against established thresholds using dedicated workstations that replay scripted
transactions. Active agents represent predictable users in a known environment performing
measurements at scheduled intervals, therefore providing "control" measurements.
APPLICATION VANTAGE
Application Vantage is an application profiling and performance tool for pre-deployment
or production troubleshooting.
This tool pinpoints and resolves application performance problems and highlights
the cause of application degradation down to client, network or server components
or the application itself. It is equally adaptable in pre-deployment application
profiling and testing or application trouble-shooting in a production environment.
Pre-deployment testing: The purpose is to baseline the application performance in
a test-bed environment and highlight application bottlenecks prior to production.
The use of its predictive analysis feature predicts the user response times for
application transactions when accessed over a Wide Area Network (WAN) link, using
a range of latency, bandwidth, loading or multiple user values. The breakdown highlights
any application inefficiencies that would be exacerbated over a WAN link by providing
low level proof of coding issues that could be subsequently highlighted to developers.
Production troubleshooting: Here the objective is to measure the end-to-end user
response times over a WAN and to isolate application problems to individual components
(workstation, network infrastructure, servers or application). The tool focuses
on the performance issues of distributed and client / server applications by being
able to capture and merge user transactions across a WAN to determine the precise
cause of user application degradation.
NETWORK VANTAGE
Network Vantage concentrates on network infrastructure performance, troubleshooting
and reporting capabilities.
Network Vantage provides visibility into LAN and WAN resource consumption. It thus
focuses on the analysis of critical application performance on the network in order
to highlight network bottlenecks, application traffic type breakdown and congested
WAN links.
NetworkVantage is a passive monitoring solution that delivers enterprise-wide metrics
on application performance and network resource consumption. It gathers traffic
flow information for more than 2000 applications and protocols. Vantage provides
valuable details about network traffic for business-critical applications, identifying
potential problems by distinguishing between bandwidth contention, latency and client
or server response-time problems.
For intrusion analysis, Network Vantage provides a breakdown on users accessing
the network, providing metrics including the users application, the server being
accessed and date / time for investigating unplanned network activity.
SERVER VANTAGE
Server Vantage primarily provides server, application health / availability and
database monitoring. Server Vantage provides extensive server monitoring capabilities
for the operating system, database and application layers.
Monitoring is both real-time and historical.
Real-time monitoring can be performed against pre-defined critical thresholds or
event generation for out-of-bounds conditions occurrence. Thus the server manager
can be notified at the beginning of any application degradation before users are
affected.
The historical monitoring and trend analysis can assist in recognising trends, load
balance applications, capacity planning and for the generation of management and
service level reports.
